Research Note: The Answerable Being as a Framework for Islamic Anthropology
This research note frames the answerable being as a philosophical and Qur’anic model for studying the human person in Islamic anthropology.
The answerable being is a framework for asking what kind of creature the human being is when revelation, law, knowledge, moral responsibility, and final accountability are considered together.
Research problem
Modern anthropology often studies the human being through partial registers: biological development, social identity, psychological behavior, political rights, economic participation, or technological capability.
Each register may reveal something real. None of them, by itself, explains the human being as a creature addressed by God, capable of knowledge, burdened with responsibility, and answerable for action.
Framework definition
The answerable being names the human being considered through address, trust, moral recognition, responsibility, repentance, guidance, and final accountability.
This framework does not deny the body, society, psychology, or history. It refuses only the reduction of the human being to any one of these dimensions.
Qur’anic anthropology
In Qur’anic anthropology, the human being appears as created, taught, addressed, tested, tempted, capable of repentance, and called to return.
Adam is central because the Adamic passages present the human being not merely as living, but as answering.
Organism
The body can be studied biologically without exhausting human meaning.
Moral Subject
The human becomes answerable through address, trust, choice and accountability.
Law
Law assumes a being capable of obligation and judgment.
Revelation
Revelation addresses the human as capable of guidance and return.
The answerable being is a framework for understanding why the human being can be addressed, burdened, guided, judged, and called back.
